Salt- and Alkali-Corrosion-Resistant Nickel-Based Alloy Monel 400 Tubing
Product Introduction and Core Positioning: Nickel-Based Alloy Monel 400 Tubing
Monel 400 (UNS N04400) is a hard nickel-copper alloy, mainly composed of nickel (about 63-70%) and copper (about 28-34%). Monel 400 is available in two forms: seamless and stamped. Among these materials, the seamless tubes with a single, seamless surface perform particularly well in pressurized environments requiring high precision.
In seawater containing 3.5% NaCl, its creep rate is 0.002 millimeters per year. This alloy has extremely strong resistance to salt water and acid corrosion, and compared to ordinary stainless steel, it can more effectively resist salt fog, pitting corrosion and stress corrosion cracking.
Monel 400 can be applied in fluorine-containing environments and demonstrates outstanding performance throughout all stages of the water supply system (starting from below the groundwater level). Monel 400 exhibits excellent corrosion resistance in various chlorine-containing media environments; in the presence of Cl⁻ ions in oil and gas fields, its pressure resistance can reach up to 250 MPa.
Applicable Operating Conditions and Industries for Monel 400 Nickel-based Alloy Tubes
Monel 400 tubes play an irreplaceable role in the following specific working conditions:
- They can withstand the repeated impact and erosion of flowing seawater very well.
The general ordinary stainless steel would easily rust when placed in still seawater, and its service life is extremely short. However, Monel 400 is different. The more intense the seawater impact and the faster the dynamic flow, the more stable it becomes. Because its surface can form a protective film by itself, which can not only withstand water flow erosion but also prevent chemical corrosion. Therefore, the material of Monel 400 is particularly suitable for the manufacturing of equipment and parts in areas where seawater splashes.
- Exhibits extraordinary resistance to hydrofluoric acid
Monel 400 is one of the few metals that can withstand the corrosion of hydrofluoric acid at various concentrations and temperatures (up to the boiling point). For example, when conducting alkylation processes in oil refineries, hydrofluoric acid is both toxic and highly corrosive, but Monel 400 can handle it. More importantly, it is also not prone to hydrogen embrittlement, which ensures safety in high-pressure acidic environments.
- Capable of strongly resisting strong alkalis and non-oxidizing acids
When it comes to neutral salts, caustic soda (such as sodium hydroxide), and those non-oxidizing acids (like phosphoric acid, organic acids), Monel 400 handles them all with ease. In simple terms, “it’s not afraid of anything”, and it performs exceptionally well in complex chemical neutralization reactions.
The Monel 400 pipe materials supplied by TIPTOP are widely used in the following technologically-intensive fields:
- Ocean Engineering and Ship Power:
Mainly used for manufacturing submarine heat exchangers, propeller shaft sleeves, seawater desalination pump valves, and water supply pipelines for offshore platforms. Its anti-biofouling ability and mechanical toughness ensure an extremely long service life of the equipment under deep-sea high-pressure conditions.
Petrochemicals and Energy Conversion:
It is the core material for the lining of crude oil distillation towers, boiler feedwater heaters, and acid fluid transportation pipelines in refineries. In conversion processes involving high salinity and acidic catalysts, Monel 400 provides extremely high system integrity.
Due to its excellent nuclear physical properties and resistance to high-temperature steam corrosion, Monel 400 is commonly used in the fully fluorinated environment of uranium enrichment processes, as well as in the auxiliary pipeline systems of nuclear power plants.
- Salt industry and mining:
In the production and evaporation processes of sodium chloride (table salt), Monel 400 pipe materials can effectively resist the wear and chemical attacks caused by high-concentration salt solutions, significantly reducing the frequency of equipment downtime and maintenance.

Product advantages of the Monel alloy tubes produced by TIPTOP:
- Excellent corrosion resistance: Through component optimization (adding alloy elements such as chromium, nickel, and molybdenum), a dense passivation film is formed, effectively resisting various corrosive media, avoiding problems such as pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking; compared with carbon steel and ordinary stainless steel, these ordinary alloys are prone to corrosion and rusting in medium and strong acid, high salt environments, with a typical service life of 1-2 years; the corrosion rate of Monel 400 special alloy is ≤ 0.01mm/a, and the service life can reach 5-8 years. In harsh corrosive conditions, the advantages are more obvious, avoiding safety hazards such as equipment shutdown and leakage caused by corrosion.
- Extreme moisture and water resistance: The material is highly rated for high temperature resistance, high pressure resistance, and corrosion resistance, which makes it suitable for long-term use in cold climates. Conventional composites, on the other hand, are prone to cracking and breaking at elevated temperatures and pressures and exhibit low ductility and toughness. This unique compound has 30 to 50% higher strength than conventional composites and more than 40% higher thermal resistance, so it meets the requirements of high-performance applications.
- Balanced mechanical properties: The composite combines high tensile strength and high ductility, meeting the requirements of the application, while minimizing material stresses. While conventional mixes cost less than the initial purchase, maintenance costs are often higher, and short-term replacement costs are higher. While the initial cost of purchasing this life jacket is 10-20% higher than standard life jackets, it lasts 3-5 times longer and maintenance costs are reduced by more than 60%, ensuring long-term use.
- Excellent processing performance: It can be processed by various methods such as stamping, forging, welding, and machining, meeting the customization requirements for different shapes and specifications of products.
- Strong stability: During long-term use, its performance degrades slowly, and the dimensional accuracy retention is good, requiring no frequent maintenance and replacement.
Overview of the TIPTOP Monel Tube Production Process
Manufacturing Flow
Raw Material Selection → Homogenization → Vacuum Casting → Mold Pressing → Pressure Forming → Pressure Forming (Forging/Rolling) → Machining → Shaping → Finishing → Surface Treatment
Processing Techniques
- Vacuum Deposition: A vacuum deposition process is employed to prevent the oxidation of binders and additives during the deposition stage, thereby eliminating porosity and cracks.
- Horizontal Annealing: The material is annealed at 850–950 °C for 4–6 hours to relieve internal stresses within the rods and to enhance the material’s strength and machinability.
- Machining: Depending on the product dimensions, processing is carried out using either forging (suitable for irregular shapes and thick-walled components) or turning (suitable for plates, tubes, and profiles). Machining temperatures and strain rates are strictly controlled to ensure that the material’s mechanical properties meet the required standards.
- Precision Machining: Utilizing tools such as CNC lathes, cutting tools, and drill bits—and adhering to various established standards—tolerances are controlled within ±0.02 mm to achieve precise dimensional accuracy.
- Surface Treatment: For specific operating conditions, surface roughening, the application of corrosion-inhibiting coatings (e.g., PTFE), or sandblasting treatments may be applied to further inhibit corrosion.
